Theo Jansen's Strandbeest - GeoGebra by JesusF - Thinking and Experimenting

 #4 Leg Forum
Here we have put some of our thoughts about the (headless) Strandbeest and its construction in GeoGebra. Please experiment and comment!
Experiments you can try now in the interactivity below
  • Currently the strandbeest has no head and with his feet pointed to the left he appears to be walking to the left. What if we just reversed the direction of his feet? Would he then appear tomoving to the right?
  • We have 2 rotating points C and R. We have made legs A and B move in sync with C and legs R and S move in sync with R and "said" that the first 2 legs A and B are left legs and the other 2 legs R and S are right legs. Do you agree with this? Would this make the strandbeest sway from side to side as he walks?
  • Do you think that the proportions of the strandbeest are correct? Try changing them. Can you make him appear that he will topple forward at any moment? What if his upper legs are long and his lower legs are short?
  • Remember when we build the first leg, we marveled that the circular motion of the motor becomes an arc pelvis motion. Change the relative size of the bodylength (bl), the motor (m), the pelvis (pC and phA) and see what happens.

Experiments and ideas to think about

  • Horses walk, trot and gallop. How do their legs move for these types of movement? What do you think the strandbeest is doing?
  • Animals have 4 points of movement for their front and back legs. Here we have only 2 points A and B. How might you change this?

GeoGebra Exploring Interactivity - the Beest Moves   Directions for InterActivity

To stop the horizonatal motion, right click on the t slider and deselect "Animation on".

Click and drag the "incline" slider to change the slope of the ground. Click and drag the "d" slider to change the distance from the body to the ground so that the strandbeest feet walk on the ground. Double-click to open in GeoGebra. You can then save this file to your computer.
